Stephen Curry and Warriors Agree to One-Year, $62.6 Million Extension
Golden State Warriors’ star guard Stephen Curry has reached an agreement on a one-year, $62.6 million contract extension, according to his agent, Jeff Austin of Octagon, who confirmed the news to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Thursday.
This extension ensures Curry remains with the Warriors through the 2026-27 season. With this deal, Curry joins LeBron James and Kevin Durant as one of the few NBA players to surpass $500 million in career earnings.
Curry initially signed a four-year, $215.4 million contract in August 2021, which still had two years remaining. However, due to the NBA’s over-38 rule—which restricts players who will turn 38 during a contract from signing deals longer than one year—Curry was only eligible for a one-year extension this offseason.
The extension will be officially signed on Thursday, according to Austin.
At 36, Curry has consistently expressed his desire to remain with the Warriors, the only team he has ever played for. “I’ve always said I want to be a Warrior for life,” Curry shared with Andscape in July. He also noted that while he is committed to staying with Golden State, his willingness to remain depends on the team’s competitiveness, stating, “if it is a situation where you’re a bottom-feeder and it’s just because you want to stay there, I’d have a hard time with that.”
Ensuring Curry’s continued presence has been a key focus for the Warriors this offseason. The team has been actively retooling its roster, aiming to maximize their chances of success while Curry is still playing at an elite level. Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy expressed confidence in securing Curry for the coming years, emphasizing that Curry could “get whatever he wants” to stay with the team.
During the 2023-24 season, Curry, in his 15th year, averaged 26.4 points, 5.1 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game, shooting 40.8% from beyond the arc.
However, the Warriors are transitioning into a new era, as longtime teammate Klay Thompson departed for the Dallas Mavericks after 13 seasons with Golden State. Moving forward, the Warriors plan to lean more heavily on young talents like Jonathan Kuminga, Brandin Podziemski, and Trayce Jackson-Davis, alongside veteran Draymond Green. Kuminga, who is entering his fourth season, is up for an extension that could be worth up to $215 million over five years.
To strengthen their roster, the Warriors have also added players like Buddy Hield, Kyle Anderson, and De’Anthony Melton.
Stephen Curry, a 10-time All-Star, two-time MVP, and Olympic gold medalist, has been instrumental in leading the Warriors to four NBA championships, solidifying his legacy as one of the greatest players in NBA history.
